“Change your behavior or change your name.” – Alexander the Great
The night was warm and Alexander the Great was restless. As he walked about the camp, he came across a young soldier who had fallen asleep at his post.
Alexander was furious. He scolded the man for his incompetence and lectured him about the danger this mistake posed to his fellow soldiers.
“What is your name, son!” Alexander demanded harshly.
“Uh… Well… My name is Alexander, Sir.”
“WHAT? What did you say?!”
Terrified, the guilty soldier trembled beneath the gaze of his commander. There was a long pause, then the young man fearfully responded again, “Uh… My name is Alexander.”
For a moment, only deafening silence and terror filled the space between them.
Alexander the Great stiffened. He stepped close to the man. The soldier could feel the heat of his breath on his face.
“Son, you either change your behavior or you change your name!”
In what ways do you fall asleep at your post?
Acts 11:26 (NIV) “The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.”
It is a great honor and a great responsibility to be the namesake of Christ. Everything we do and say reflects upon Him.
We must not fall asleep at our post! When we do, it weakens our defenses and exposes the camp (the church) to the attacks of Satan’s army.
1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV) “Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.”
Ways to stay awake:
1. Remain active. Involve yourself in the work of the church. Volunteer!
2. Keep focused. Read! Pray! Meditate on the mission!
3. Ask for help. Your best friends must be those who are spiritually minded!
